Well, the planning is over. I have identified hikes for the 2008 Spring and Summer --  through the Presidential Traverse on July 19th 2008.  I am looking for hiking partners.

So old friend or new friend... Let's go!

  • Mt. Ascutney via the The Weathersfield Trail
    April 05, 2008
One of four hiking trails that go to the summit of Mt. Ascutney, the Weathersfield Trail is probably the most scenic. Highlights of this trail include Little Cascade Falls (.04 miles), Crystal Cascade Falls (an 84 foot high waterfall at 1.1 miles) and the...
  • Smarts Mountain
    April 19, 2008
Smarts Mountain, at 3,240 feet, has a feel about it similar to the higher White Mountain peaks further north. Trail follows along the spine of Lambert Ridge for the next 1.3 miles, with frequent views. On the summit, a firetower (abandoned in 1976)...
  • Mount Moosilauke
    May 03, 2008
Mount Moosilauke, 4,802 feet, the western-most 4,000-footer in NH, on a clear day, affords hikers stunning views. This loop, the simplest and most popular, starts at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. It climbs the Gorge Brook Trail and descends the...
  • Franconia Ridge Traverse
    May 25, 2008
Join me to hike this classic as I get ready for a single-day Presidential Traverse in July! This is a classic, the views along the ridge are spectacular if the weather cooperates. It is done using the Old Bridle Path, Greenleaf, Franconia Ridge and...

  • Moriah Extreme Hike
    May 31, 2008
What a way to celebrate my birthday -- come join me on one awesome hike (bring an extra pair of dry shoes). Spectacular views -- and few people compared to the rest of the whites -- unmarked trails -- wilderness area -- and the Wild River... 15.3...
  • East Royce Mountain
    June 01, 2008
An easy hike with great views after yesterday's extreme hike. We'll take a quick hike after breakfast and breaking camp via the East Royce Trail from Evans Notch to the summit of 3,116-foot East Royce. It's a steady, moderately demanding climb, with...
  • Southern Presidential Traverse
    June 08, 2008
Continuing to get ready for that traverse... Let's hit the southern Presidentials! The southern presidentials -- need I say more? "The hills are alive.... with the sound of..." gay hikers. The Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail is the most direct western route...
  • Mount Chocorua via Liberty Trail
    June 15, 2008
Great 360 degree views from this easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range. The Liberty Trail: Leaving the NE side of the parking lot, the trail ascends at a steady, moderate grade along an old bridle path. The Durrell Brook is crossed at 1.1 miles, one...
  • Camping at Basin Campground
    June 20, 2008 - June 22, 2008
Basecamp for the solstice hikes. Camp for two nights in this little used section of the White Mountain National Forest. Hike the Baldface Circle Trail on Saturday and Blueberry Mountain on Sunday morning. Camping gear, hiking gear. From Fryeburg,...
  • Baldface Circle

Celebrate the solstice with over three miles of mixed ledge walking! Camp out for the weekend at Basin Campground -- or just come for the day. Take a dip in ice cold Emerald Pool. Distance: About 9.8 miles total around loop Elevation gain: About...
  • Blueberry Mountain
    June 22, 2008
Camp out for the weekend at Basin Campground -- or just come for the day. A quick hike with a great view of the Baldfaces (from the day before). Take a dip in ice cold Rattlesnake Pool. An easy 3.4 mile hike with approximately 300 feet of eleveation...
  • Adams via the Airline Trail
    June 28, 2008
Two more hikes (counting this one) before the single-day Presidential Traverse. Join me for a loop hike with great views. The Airline Trail has great views down into King's Ravine from the "knife edge" of Durant's Ridge. Ascend via Airline - A...
  • The Tripyramids
    July 12, 2008
Join me on this classic 11-mile loop that tags the summit of all three Tripyramids -- the last "prep" hike before the single-day Presidential Traverse. The Tripyramids are best known for their slides, exposed slabs of rock that are visible from long...
  • Camping at Dolly Copp
    July 18, 2008 - July 20, 2008
    Basecamp for the Presidential Traverse
  • Single-day Presidential Traverse
    July 19, 2008
Join me for an extreme event -- 1-day, 21-miles, 6500 feet of elevation gain, 6500 feet of elevation loss. Covering the entire presidential range in a single day. 21 miles of extreme rigorous hiking -- most of it above treeline. Be prepared for...
